MTSU Department of Psychology
Belongingness and Engagement Committee
Committee Members 2025-2026
Description
The Belongingness and Engagement committee is responsible for creating and maintaining a departmental atmosphere where all students feel valued and included. We offer opportunities throughout each semester for students to engage with academic and non-academic events and activities that increase a sense of community at the department, college, and university levels. We strive to provide activities that allow students to engage with one another, form relationships with faculty and staff, network with professionals in their field, and become involved in campus life.
Current Activities
- Annual BE Successful Symposium: this is a virtual symposium in which speakers from several fields of psychology – often MTSU alumni – speak about graduate school and how they started successful careers in psychology. The symposium includes a panel discussion and breakout rooms where students can speak with each presenter one-on-one.
- Departmental yoga classes: each year we collaborate with the Social and Professional Activities Committee to organize 1-2 yoga classes for students, faculty, and staff in the department. These classes are focused on engaging our community in positive coping techniques for stress reduction.
- Clothing swap: the committee works with multiple organizations across campus, including the Career Center and the College of Liberal Arts, to host a student clothing swap where students can donate gently used clothing and/or shop the contributions of others for free.
- Maintain departmental resources on Belongingness and Engagement and organize talks, events, and student communications as opportunities arise.
